McConaughey Claims Woody Harrelson May Be His Real Brother

Actor Matthew McConaughey has made an interesting claim that his co-star in the show True Detective, Woody Harrelson, might actually be his real brother. Matthew, who is 53 years old, believes that his mother, Mary, had a sexual relationship with Charles Harrelson, Woody’s father, who was a hitman and died in prison in 2007.

What Led to the Suspicion?

During a family vacation in Greece a few years ago, Matthew’s mother revealed that she knew Woody’s father, Charles, which led to Matthew’s suspicions that Charles may have had a sexual encounter with his mother during a period when she was separated from Matthew’s father.

Mathew said, “In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families. And my mom is there, and she says, “Woody, I knew your dad.” Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after “knew”. It was a loaded K-N-E-W.”

Matthew and Woody’s Relationship

Matthew recently discussed his friendship with Woody in an interview on the “Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa” podcast. He mentioned that their friendship has always been special and somewhat blurry, as it’s difficult to distinguish where one ends and the other begins.

In a recent interview, Matthew revealed that his family often mistakes pictures of Woody for him and vice versa. He also said, “My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew. And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.”

Although the pair are set to work together in the upcoming Apple TV+ comedy series “Brother From Another Mother,” they have not yet taken a DNA test to confirm or deny Matthew’s hunch.

While Charles Harrelson passed away 16 years ago, Diane Lou Oswald, who is believed to be Woody’s mother, is still alive.

Matthew’s Take on the Whole Scenario

In his memoir Greenlights, Matthew revealed that his own father passed away from a heart attack during intercourse. Because of the potential implications of a DNA test, Matthew feels that he has more at stake than Woody in terms of the outcome.

The star said, “Look, it’s a little easier for Woody to say, ‘Come on, let’s do [DNA tests],’ because what’s the skin in it for him?”

“It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?’ I got a little more skin in the game.”
