On Thursday, the FBI arrested a suspect in connection with the US intelligence leak, which purportedly revealed sensitive information on the war in Ukraine gathered by the US intelligence community.

The suspect has been identified as Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard.

Since the sensitive documents were leaked on a popular social platform online, the FBI and other US law enforcement agencies have been investigating the source of the leak with the utmost urgency.

Jack Teixeira arrested by FBI for intelligence leak

The arrest of Teixeira was announced on Thursday by Attorney General Merrick Garland. Teixeira had been previously identified by The New York Times as the leader of the group who leaked the intelligence on Discord, an online social platform popularly used by gamers and host to the AI image generator, Midjourney.

“This investigation is ongoing. We will share more information at the appropriate time,” said Garland, who refused to elaborate further on the ongoing case.

In the days since the leak occurred, the FBI has been conducting interviews as part of its investigation to narrow down the list of possible suspects.

The investigation was complicated by the large number of individuals who had access to the leaked documents. However, the forensic trail left by the person who originally posted the classified documents made it possible for the FBI to narrow its search down to a smaller list of relevant suspects.

A few days ahead of the arrest, US President Joe Biden implied that investigators were closing in on the source of the leak.

“There’s a full-blown investigation going on, as you know,” Biden said earlier on Thursday. “The intelligence community and the Justice Department. And they’re getting close. I don’t have an answer for you.”

Beyond the FBI’s involvement, the investigation includes several arms of the US government, including the Army Criminal Investigation Division

The US intelligence leak reportedly contained sensitive information about the war in Ukraine, including assessments on Russian and Ukrainian forces, Western weapons and munitions deliveries scheduled to arrive in Ukraine, and a planned Ukrainian offensive.

It was also reported that the leaked intelligence documents revealed details about the presence of NATO member states’ special forces in Ukraine.

Biden dismissed the severity of the content that was leaked, explaining that he was more concerned by the occurrence of the intelligence leak than the information exposed as a result.

“I’m not concerned about the leak. I’m concerned that it happened, but there’s nothing contemporaneous that I’m aware of that is of any consequence,” said the US president.

According to CNN, the Pentagon has instituted changes to limit the frequency of leaks. Fewer government officials and defense personnel will now receive certain sensitive daily intelligence briefs as a result.
