A video capturing the moment lightning struck the spire of the One World Trade Center in NYC during a thunderstorm has gone viral on social media.

Photographer Max Guliani tweeted the clip of the spectacular moment lightning bolts hit the skyscraper on Saturday night, writing: “Tonight’s lightning storm over One World Trade.”

The clip has amassed more than two million views and more than 23,000 likes.

Commenters reacted with awe, with one person saying the clip “is probably the most incredible footage of lightning you’ll ever see.”

Gary Hershorn, a photojournalist, tweeted two photos of the moment lightning struck the One World Trade Center.

In his images, taken from Hoboken, New Jersey, the bolts can be seen fanning out across the sky above Lower Manhattan, the Hudson River, and Jersey City.

The National Weather Service said a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for parts of New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Massachusetts until 10 p.m. on Saturday night.

The NWS warned people that wind gusts of up to 65 mph, hail, and tornadoes were possible.

NYC Emergency Management warns that regardless of their severity, all thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people nationally each year than tornadoes. Strong winds, hail, flooding, and tornadoes are other dangers associated with thunderstorms.

New York State is considered to have a “moderate” occurrence of lightning, with 3.8 strikes occurring per square mile each year.

According to the National Weather Service, the Empire State Building is hit by lightning an average of 25 times per year. In one storm, it was hit eight times in 24 minutes.

The lightning strike in NYC follows deadly tornadoes in the south, midwest

The lightning strike in NYC came after dozens were killed and thousands left without power when a series of tornadoes tore through towns and cities in the south and midwest of the United States.

Homes were destroyed and thousands left without power after huge storms caused devastation across several states.

There have been more than 80 reported tornadoes since 31 March, according to the National Weather Service.

States including Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Alabama and Mississippi have all had fatalities.

The death toll is highest in Tennessee, where 15 people were killed after tornadoes swept through multiple counties, local officials said.

Another storm tore apart the Arkansas town of Wynne – a community some 100 miles (170km) east of the state capital, Little Rock. Wynne’s mayor, Jennifer Hobbs, told CNN that the town was “cut in half by damage from east to west”.

Footage from affected areas showed the devastating effect of the extreme weather and the extent of material damage; destroyed homes, shredded buildings and piled-up vehicles.
