Despite inheriting a sizeable fortune from her late grandfather, the Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, the personal fortune of Athina Onassis has reportedly declined by a significant margin.

The fortune of Aristotle Onassis, which has steadily been acquired by his granddaughter Athina, is estimated to have been worth $2.3 billion.

However, according to recent reports and speculation, the personal fortune of Athina Onassis has dwindled dramatically to $500 million; still a very sizeable fortune, but a drastic downsizing of wealth, all the same.

The declining fortune of Athina Onassis

The alleged shrinking of Athina’s fortune was revealed by comments made by TV presenter Tasos Tergiakis on Proino.

From her grandfather Aristotle, who made his fortunes in shipping, and her mother Christina, Athina Onassis inherited half a billion dollars worth of real estate, US deposits worth an estimated $40 million, Latin American deposits worth $90 million, and company investments worth $200 million, in addition to an unknown amount held in Swiss banks.

Now however, the shipping tycoon’s granddaughter reportedly possesses less than $500 million spread across 217 bank accounts, with an additional $300 million in cash, a variety of stocks, and an unspecified number of gold bars.

Personal life

The lone heiress to the Onassis fortune turned 38 just a few months ago in January. Her uncle Alexandros died in an airplane accident in 1973.

Despite her riches, she seems to have been singled out for a life of tragedy and difficulties. Her mother, Christina Onassis, was found dead on November 19, 1988 in the bathtub of a friend’s house in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Athina was only three years of age when her mother Christina passed away of a pulmonary edema. Since the death of Christina Onassis, she is the sole surviving member of the Onassis family.

Beyond her family associations, she is best known for her career as an equestrian. As a professional showjumper, she has represented Greece in the 2013 European Show Jumping Championships and the 2014 World Championships.

It was through show jumping that Athina met her former husband, Alvaro de Miranda Neto, also known as Doda, a Brazilian showjumper. The couple married in 2005 when Athina was only 20 years old.

They continued to travel the world, competing in the glittering world of show jumping for eleven years until Athina’s world was rocked after revelations of her husband’s serial infidelity came to light.

Revelations of the infidelity ultimately led to a very difficult divorce, that took years to resolve.

In 2017, the Greek tabloid newspaper, Espresso, reported that the two parties had reached an agreement which left the then 32-year-old Athina with her fortune mostly intact, although there had been other reports that the legal process had cost her $100 million. Neither she nor Doda attended the legal proceedings in person, being represented by their lawyers.

Athina has generally been known to keep a low profile. Although she does appear publicly for equestrian events, she has never garnered a reputation for the ostentatious displays of wealth often associated with figures of similar riches and status.
