Authorities in Greece are searching for clues to the mystery surrounding the death of an American couple living in the country.

David Harrison Robinson, 83, and his 80-year-old wife, Lucretia Robinson, were found dead in a 200 -meter -deep ravine in a remote range of the Taygetos mountain, nearly 40 days after a silver alert was issued after their disappearance.

Authorities are expected to release the results of the post-mortem examination that could offer insight into whether their deaths were the result of a road accident or a suicide.

The couple had lived near the town of Methoni for the last several years where they had bought a house overlooking the sea.

Forensic experts are hoping to find answers as to whether the couple had a terrible road accident and crashed into the ravine, or whether, as their US-based daughter claims, they committed suicide.

According to firefighters, the bodies of the elderly couple were found outside their car due to the impact. They first recovered the body of the woman and later they discovered the body of her husband that was lying at least 80 meters further away into the ravine. Lucretia Robinson’s body had signs of bites from wild animals.

The material gathered at the scene was carefully examined. Firefighters, police officers and members of EMAK rushed to the point where the vehicle and the corpses of the two Americans were found.

The post-mortem examination will show exactly how the elderly couple passed away and the day and time it happened.

American couple left a note before their disappearance in Greece

David and Lucretia Robinson loved each other, had a daughter, lived together and died together. The couple had left America and stayed in their own home in the area of Dapia Methoni overlooking the sea and the castle.

They had friendly relationships with many of the local residents. One of their friends declared their disappearance on February 6 at the police station in the nearby city of Kalamata on January 23.

The friend -who wants to retain her anonymity – was calling the couple’s cell phones but was getting  no reply. She eventually contacted their daughter Julianna Robinson in the US, and they both agreed to issue a note of disappearance.

A Silver Alert was issued on Lifelinehellas.gr, stating that the couple left their home on January 23, 2023, with a possible destination of Monemvasia in Laconia, and have been missing since then.

The family friend speaking to news outlet Proto Thema said that the couple left a note on the kitchen table addressed to their daughter before they disappeared.

“We will love you our child. Don’t be sad,” the note said according to the couple’s friend.

American couple “full of appetite for life”

“David and Lucretia were one of the most beloved and in love couples I’ve ever seen, full of appetite for life, ” the friend told Proto Thema.

“I admired them because, despite their advanced age, they kept their imagination alive they did different things together.”

She also revealed that Lucretia was suffering from a rare side effect after her Covid vaccination, which had affected her psychologically. She added that the American woman had mobility issues and she was perhaps suffering from dementia in its early stages.

The couple’s daughter, Julianna Robinson, was convinced that her parents had committed suicide.

“My parents are officially missing and presumed dead of their own accord,” she wrote on Facebook. “They were in Greece when it happened; I don’t know where they went to end their lives, so until their bodies are found I need the help of my community to stay functional,” she added, but did not explain why she thinks her parents committed suicide.

After the discovery of her parents’ bodies, she wrote on Facebook: “My parents’ bodies were just found at the base of a cliff. No more details yet.

“It will take several days to retrieve their bodies, have them formally identified and a death certificate issued. More information as I can, when I can.”
