The National Meteorological Service (EMY) of Greece issued an emergency notice of severe weather conditions on Thursday as the country braces for winter storms.

A severe weather system called ”EVA” is expected to create a barometric low in northern Italy on Friday, which will move southeast and cause hazardous weather conditions across most of Greece.

Winter storm Eva to land in Greece

Eva will be the first winter storm to hit Greece. The emergency notice warns of powerful downpours and lightings. EMY said that the severe weather was expected to hit the islands of the Ionian early on Saturday before moving to the western Greek Mainland and Peloponnese later in the day.

The stormy weather will continue stretching east and hit central Greece and the eastern Greek Mainland, including Athens, overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning.

On Sunday, heavy rains and storms will occur until noon in the Ionian Sea, until the afternoon on the Greek Mainland (except Thrace), from the morning hours in the Cyclades, Crete and the Sporades and from noon in the Dodecanese.

It has been noted that the phenomena will be particularly intense in places in western and central Macedonia, eastern Thessaly and the Sporades.

Unpleasant weather expected in November

The meteorologist Clearchos Marousakis recently emphasized that the main characteristics of such the unpleasant weather front will be the heavy rains, storms and very strong south winds.

According to Marousakis, statistically speaking, November is the most dangerous month in terms of weather.

”The main reason for such phenomena is because the sea absorbs and releases heat at a much slower rate. Therefore, the sea retains the heat from the warm days of the previous summer months. This, in turn, creates large temperature differences in height and the atmospheric phenomena become more intense,” he says.

Flood warnings issued

The warm summer weather, which characterized October, will shift towards the southwest of Europe, essentially opening the way for more disagreeable weather to move towards Greece.

Winter Storm Eva will bring with it not only dangerous storms, but also very strong southerlies, is therefore expected to affect Greece during the weekend and on Monday. Given that there have been several summery days in a row keeping Greek seas locally quite warm, it is very likely that the turn in meteorology conditions will bring large volumes of water.

The first data by EMY indicates that parts of the western, central and southern Greece in particular will be severely tested, making a significant increase the chances of flooding, especially in coastal areas much more likely.

Emergency services on high alert

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection says it has warned emergency services, as well as local authorities, to be on increased alert in order to deal with the effects of the severe weather immediately.

It also advises citizens to be more vigilant as well as avoid any form of unnecessary travel.
