Cyprus has broken Greece’s undefeated record in UEFA Nations League, winning the match with 1-0 at the AEK Arena in Larnaca on Saturday.

Estonia is now the only country that still has an undefeated record in the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League season.

This was an unexpected victory for Cyprus. It is their first-ever in a competitive match against Greece and also their first in any kind of match against Greece’s national football team in over two decades.

The last win of the national football team of Cyprus against Greece in a friendly game was in 2001, and the last time that they defeated Greece on Cyprus territory was in 1959.

Saturday’s goal was scored by Marinos Tzionis early in the game at the eighteenth minute.

This was the debut match of Temur Ketsbaia as manager  of the Cyprus national team.

Greece and Cyprus advance in UEFA Nations League

Greece has already secured its place in League B of the UEFA Nations League and counted four consecutive wins in the tournament.

Cyprus will now battle Kosovo, and Greece will battle Northern Ireland in the final group stage of League C of the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday, September 27th.

The match between Greece and Northern Ireland will take place at the 14,200-capacity Georgios Kamaras Stadium in Rizoupoli, Athens at 9:45 pm local time.

Northern Ireland defeated Kosovo 2-1 at the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park on Saturday. Therefore, Cyprus will need to either beat Kosovo or produce better results than the Irish team to avoid dropping to League D.
