Greece confirmed 23,621 new Covid-19 infections and 55 deaths associated with the virus in the last 24 hours, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) announced on Friday.

A total of 24,256 cases had been recorded in the country the day before, Thursday, and 59 people died with the virus.

Since the pandemic began, Greece has confirmed a total of 2,756,487 Covid-19 infections. Of the cases recorded in the last seven days, 196 infections are related to travel from abroad and 1,802 to other confirmed cases.

WHO Official states that pandemic is “far from over”

After a recent spike in cases was recorded across the world, WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris stated that the pandemic is “far from over” on Friday.

Previously, public health experts predicted that the pandemic may be nearing its end this year, but that its end would largely depend on increasing vaccination rates across the world.

Even though case numbers had been declining across the world for a month, last week saw a surprising uptick in transmissions internationally. “We are definitely in the middle of the pandemic,” Harris stated.

In China’s Jilin province, residents are under strict lockdown as the virus has spread throughout the region.

The omicron variant, along with the easing of anti-virus measures around the world, have likely contributed to this increase in cases.

354 people with Covid-19 on ventilators in Greece

The 55 deaths associated with the coronavirus recorded in the last 24 hours bring the total number of people who have died with the virus in Greece to 26,847. Of those who passed away, 95.2 percent had an underlying condition and/or were aged 70 or over.

A total of 354 coronavirus patients are on ventilators in hospitals on Friday, compared to the 358 undergoing the treatment the day before.

The median age of intubated patients is 69 and 90.4 percent have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or over. Of the total, 228 (64.41%) are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and 126 (35.59%) are fully vaccinated.

A total of 4,384 patients have been discharged from ICUs in Greece since the pandemic began.

In addition, 359 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospitals in the last 24 hours. The average admission of patients with Covid-19 to hospitals over the last seven days was 306.

The median age of those with new infections is 35 years, while the median age of the deceased is 79.
