Maria Retsa, a 20-year-old shepherd from Greece, has gone viral on TikTok after showing her daily life managing livestock in the Greek countryside.

Retsa is the only woman in her small town of Gavala on the island of Evia who works in the profession, which is mainly associated with older men in Greece and in many other parts of the world.

Speaking to interviewers on the Greek television network KRITI TV, Retsa detailed how she started sharing her videos, which have received thousands of likes.

“In the beginning, I began to post videos just because I liked it, but I noticed after that many people also liked them, and they wrote really beautiful messages in the comments,” the young shepherdess said.

Many users are curious about animal husbandry in general, as many Greeks who live in cities have very little contact with the profession nowadays.

Additionally, many Greeks have the perception that most young people from rural areas have since left and moved to the cities, but Retsa defies that stereotype.

They are also surprised to see such a young woman working as a shepherd, because it is seen as a masculine and difficult job.

“”It’s a bit rare to see women working with goats and sheep,” Retsa admitted.

Although it is a very labor intensive job, Retsa loves it. “Animal husbandry has both its difficulties and its joys, like when its the time of the year that baby animals are born.”

Her daily routine begins quite early in the morning, depending on the time of the year. “During the winter, I wake up at six in the morning, but I wake up at four in the morning during the Summer, when the animals usually give birth,” she said.

The young Greek shepherd’s first experience began at the vocational high school she attended in the nearby town of Aliveri, Evia, where she studied agriculture.

As part of her schooling, she had to wake up very early every day to feed the animals and prepare their food. She soon fell in love with the work, and decided to pursue it as her career after she completed her studies.

“My family, friends, and acquaintances are are all happy to see me do what I love…The people who follow me on social media are equally happy to see a woman engage in such a profession, one which has so many good yet so many difficult aspects,” the young Greek shepherdess stated.
