The Golden Globe Awards, which took place on Sunday, did not involve a star-studded red carpet event this year — rather, the winners were announced on social media.

A small group of Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) members met at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, California, to celebrate the awards, but none of the nominees and other stars were present, and it was not even televised.

The pared-down event came after stars and big companies such as Netflix and Amazon Studios announced that they would boycott the awards and HFPA itself due to lack of representation of people of color and women amongst its members.

Others noted that while they were nominated among the Best Foreign Language Films, Asian and Asian-American movies were not included in the Best Motion Picture Category.

According to HFPA’s rules, a film must have at least 50% of its dialogue in English to be included in the category, which caused film “Minari” to be designated a foreign language film, despite the fact that it was filmed in the US and its production team were all American.

Many noted that films like “Babel” and “Inglourious Basterds” did not meet the 50% threshold yet were still included in the Best Motion Picture Category at the Golden Globes, citing these facts as evidence of anti-Asian bias.
