Greece’s Medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have come to a close and Greece is walking away from the games with a total of four medals.

Greece won two gold medals, one silver, and one bronze. The nation’s top prizes came in from the men’s single sculls rowing — where Stefanos Ntouskos broke the Olympic record with his time — and the men’s long jump, where Miltiadis Tentoglou pulled off a shocking upset.

Greece’s men’s water polo team made history when they won the silver medal in the final against Serbia, and Eleftherios Petrounias, the Greek “Lord of the Rings,” won a bronze medal for Greece the following day after a great performance in the men’s Rings finals.

These medals are certainly something to celebrate. But the team also suffered some unfortunate setbacks: Greece’s artistic swimming team was hit by coronavirus early on in the games, after an assistant traveling with the squad tested positive for the virus, leading to the infection of three of the swimmers. The group eventually was forced to withdraw from competition.

Stefanos Ntouskos won the gold medal in men’s single sculls in rowing at the Tokyo Olympics.

Ntouskos had also competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, in the men’s lightweight coxless four, finishing in sixth place.

Ntouskos pulled off a breathtaking Olympic stunner, setting a new record at the Games with his time of 6:40.45. Norway’s Kjetil Borch finished one second after Ntouskos to take the silver medal, and Croatia’s Martin Damir trailed Borch for the bronze.

Ntouskos pulled ahead during the third quarter of the race and sustained his pace for a glorious 250-meter-run that ended in his smashing of the Olympic men’s single sculls record.

This is the 24-year-old competitive rower’s first medal at the Olympic Games and it is Greece’s first Olympic rowing gold medal, as well as its first medal of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Miltiadis Tentoglou stunned Cuba’s Juan Miguel Echevarria during the long jump final, held in the Olympic stadium of Japan’s capital.

Tentoglou wasn’t at his best in the first rounds and even missed a few attempts, but it was on round six where he made the 8.41-meter jump, enough to take down the Cuban star to second place.

The Greek athlete and Echevarria were toe to toe with both having 8.41 meters (27.59 feet) as their best effort. Tentoglou was ranked first and took gold on account of his second best jump of 8.15 meters, which eclipsed Echevarria’s 8.09 meters.

Maykel Masso, who sustained an injury in the first rounds, picked up bronze with 8.21 meters in his second attempt.

“What an incredible competition. What an incredible jump, the last jump,” Tentoglou stated after the final. “In the end I managed to pull something out to get the medal.”

Tentoglou had earlier won another gold at the 2018 European Championships while he holds a personal best of 8.60 meters (28.21 feet) in men’s long jump.

The water polo team of Greece made history despite losing 10-13 to Serbia, winning its first silver Olympic medal ever during the final at the Tokyo Olympics.

Greece played against the team of Serbia, who had won the gold medal in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Greece fought courageously throughout the game. Despite losing 4-7 during the second quarter, managed to match the Serbs and write a score of 7-7.

However, the Serbian team proved to be much more determined, reaching the final goal of getting another Olympic gold.

A few minutes before the end, the scoreboard showed 10-10. Nonetheless, the Serbs managed to score three more times, leaving the Greek team in second place.

This was the first time the Greek water polo team had qualified for the finals, and the second time they had qualified to a semi-final after the 2004 Olympic Games of Athens.

Greece managed to reach the final without a single defeat. The only time the Greek squad didn’t win was when they had a draw against Italy during the group stage.

Eleftherios Petrounias won the bronze medal in men’s Rings for Greece with his spectacular performance at the Tokyo Olympics.

Petrounias received 15,200 points and made history, winning another Olympic medal for the country five years after his personal triumph in Rio de Janeiro, where he finished first.

His dreams for another Olympic gold were not fulfilled this time as the Chinese duo of Liu Yang and You Hao won the gold and silver medals respectively.

Liu received 15,500 points and You 15,300, one hundred more than Petrounias.
