OXI Day Event to Celebrate Courage and David vs. Goliath Spirit

Thousands of people from the US, Greece and around the world are expected to tune in for the 10th annual OXI Courage and Service Awards ceremony, which will be streaming live on October 28 from Washington D.C. at 12 p.m. Eastern time.

Watch the live event:

Mike Manatos, Executive Director of the Washington OXI Day Foundation, which is organizing the event, says that this year’s celebration, the 80th anniversary of the day Greece said a heroic OXI! to the Axis powers, is a day “not just to remember the courage Greeks had shown, but also to honor heroes of yesterday and today who courageously fight the evils that threaten humankind.”

Speaking to Greek Reporter, Manatos said that it will be a “celebration of the David vs. Goliath spirit” shown by the Greek people in 1940.

Throughout history, when the world has faced seemingly insurmountable forces of destruction, Greece has inspired mankind with courage in the face of evil… and provided hope for a better future.

“With the courage of the Greeks in mind, we will honor those who served our country and defended our freedoms in war, and those today. The celebration is also about people in the world today who are showing exemplary courage,” Manatos remarked in announcing this year’s ceremony.

“People who fight on the front line of the coronavirus pandemic here in the U.S. and China and people like Congressman John Lewis, the civil rights icon, who fought against racial discrimination,” Manatos added.

This year’s honorees, apart from John Lewis, include the Wuhan whistleblower doctors who risked and gave their lives fighting COVID and Chinese suppression, Dr. Joseph Costa, who gave his life fighting COVID, Steve Pisanos, a WWII, Korea and Vietnam War Veteran (posthumously) and Andrew Mousalimas, a WWII Veteran (posthumously).

Among the featured guests at the event will be Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Greek Orthodox Archbishop of America, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros and the granddaughter of Greek Prime Minister Metaxas, who will appear from the same spot, 80 years to the day, where his “OXI!” was heard around the world.

Manatos says that there is “tremendous amount of excitement by Greek Americans for the event.”

He notes that many influential and prominent Greeks will be participating in the awards ceremony, including John Calamos, The Hon. B. Theodore Bozonelis, Jim Chanos, Father Alexander Karloutsos, Danialle Karmanos, Nick Logothetis, Andrew Manatos, Laura Evans Manatos, George Marcus, Dennis Mehiel, Dean Metropoulos and Michael Psaros.

The Washington Oxi Day Foundation, dedicated to informing American policymakers and the public about the profound role Greece played in bringing about eventual victory in World War II, also celebrates modern-day heroes who exhibit the same courage as the Greeks did in continuing to fight to preserve and promote freedom and democracy around the world.
