A 90-year-old woman unable to pay her rent who was evicted from her home in Athens, was forced to sleep on the streets for two nights.
The woman, who had been living with her grandson, was in arrears in her rent for four months. She owed 1,200 euros ($1,400). Her 25-year-old grandson was unable to find a job due to the pandemic and when he did find a day’s work, his wages wereincredibly low.
The heartbreaking incident took place at Agios Dimitrios, a suburb of south Athens late last week. A bailiff appeared at their home and locked them out, not even allowing them to take their belongings with them. The elderly lady was forced to leave her home wearing just her house robe.

Neighbors alerted the organization Doctors of the World (Médecins du Monde Greece) to the plight of the elderly Greek citizen. The organization immediately offered a dormitory for the lady and her grandson, but there was a snag: The 90-year-old would not be separated from her beloved dog, which would not be accepted in the dormitory.
“When we told them that the dog could not be accommodated in the dormitory, they told us that they would not go anywhere without the animal. They preferred to spend two days on the street with the dog, until we found a hostel for the animal. When we told them that the dog would be hosted in a hostel, then they agreed to come to the Doctors of the World dormitory,” Eugenia Thanou, the director of Doctors of the World, told the newspaper Ethnos.
“Grandmother and grandson are very close to each other. The grandmother is sad for the grandson and the grandson is anxious for the grandmother,” Thanou stressed.
As the grandson is trying to get another job, the Doctors of the World group is seeking to find a new, permanent home for the 90-year-old granny and her grandson.
