Greek NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo recently shared a post full of touching family photos on his instagram account.
In a slideshow featuring childhood pictures of Giannis and his three siblings, Thanasis, Kostas, and Alexis, the incredible athlete shows the transformation of his family throughout the years.
Born in the Athenian neighborhood of Sepolia to Nigerian parents, the Antetokounmpo brothers saw the dedication of their immigrant parents, who worked tirelessly to provide a better life for their children.
Playing basketball in his neighborhood, Giannis was soon spotted for his amazing skills, and went on to represent his country on an international scale.
His unique talent got him to the NBA, where he plays for the Milwaukee Bucks, and his lovable personality made him a fan favorite, known as the “Greek Freak.”
Giannis is not the only Antetokounmpo who is talented at basketball. All of the brothers are skilled at the sport, and Kostas recently signed with the Los Angeles Lakers and has already won an NBA championship with his new team, celebrating with the Greek flag after the win.
Proud to be Greek, Giannis Antetokounmpo represents his home country with pride, always adding a touch of Greece to anything he does. Although he has become famous in America, he has expressed an unwillingness to fully “Americanize” and lose his Greek culture.
This patriotism for Greece doesn’t mean, however, that Antetokounmpo denies the existence of discrimination and racism both in Greece and around the world.
The star athlete faced both support and criticism in Greece after recounting his sometimes negative experiences as a black man in country that is largely homogenous, and received similar responses in America when he expressed his support for the Black Lives Matter organization.
