Photographer Thanasis Voulgarakis captured the extent of the damage and human misery inflicted on thousands of refugees and migrants at the Moria camp at Lesvos, which was almost destroyed by fire early on Wednesday.
People, including women with babies, children, the elderly, the sick, and the disabled, fled in panic, carrying some of their possessions.

Most took refuge in the hills and the countryside overlooking Moria, while some attempted to walk towards the town of Mytilene, the capital of Lesvos. Police forces blockaded the highway towards Mytilene, however, to prevent migrants fleeing to the town.
By early morning, Moria was a smoldering mass of burned containers and tents. There were no reports of injuries. The cause of the blaze which burned tents, personal possessions and the containers, was not immediately clear, a fire brigade official said.

“The disaster at Moria is total,” the Secretary General of the Migration Policy Ministry, Manos Logothetis, told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).
“In cooperation with all institutions, we must find solutions and provide for the temporary and long-term accommodation of the residents there. This is a first priority for everyone,” he added.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will chair an extraordinary inter-ministerial meeting, at the Maximos Mansion, to discuss the situation at Moria and adopt measures to be taken.
