Greek authorities consider canceling this year’s Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) after the alarming increase of coronavirus cases in the city in the last few days, according to reports.
The overcrowding at TIF is a great cause of concern for health authorities because of the overcrowding and a large number of foreign representatives and visitors attending.
On Friday, Greece’s National Health Organization, EODY, announced that on Thursday there was a total of 151 Covid-19  infections in the country, with 144 of them being of domestic origin and 38 of them in Thessaloniki.
On Wednesday, the recorded number of infections in the country was 153, the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.
On Friday, Deputy Minister for Civil Protection and Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias announced that all activities, including religious services for the August 15 Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, will be canceled as a precaution.
This emergency measure, he said, was necessary due to the enormous numbers of people who celebrate Greece’s major religious feast, a day when many festivals and fairs associated with the Feast take place. This ban also extends to fairs and nighttime entertainment, and all the usual processions of August 15.
Regarding the Thessaloniki International Fair, the final decision will be made by the Infectious Diseases Committee which monitors the development of the pandemic day by day.
This year’s TIF is the 85th and the honored country is Germany, which will be represented by all key sectors of German industry, trade, and services as well as German market players with a total of 56 exhibitors at the National German Pavilion.
Speaking on Ant-1 television on Friday, government spokesperson Stelios Petsas said that at the moment all indications are that TIF will be held as scheduled. However, he said, we are at a point where we monitor closely all epidemiological data and we are able to adjust our strategy accordingly.
