U.S. President Donald Trump blamed China for the spread of the coronavirus while he vowed to defeat the radical left during his 4th of July address at the White House. Among the invited guests were frontline medical staff who served coronavirus patients, as well as military members.
President Trump touted the country’s progress in the fight against Covid-19, saying that China is responsible for the outbreak and must be “held fully accountable.”
“China’s secrecy, deceptions and cover-up allowed (the virus) to spread all over the world,” he charged.
At the same time, the U.S. president praised the nation’s scientists, promising that long before the end of the year they will produce the effective therapeutic drugs needed and/or a vaccine against the virus.
Trump made no reference to the nearly 130,000 deaths of American citizens due to the pandemic. He claimed that 99 percent of coronavirus cases were “totally harmless” and said that 40 million people have now been tested.
The president also addressed the rioters who toppled monuments of U.S. historical figures in recent protests, following the killing of George Floyd in police custody.
Trump accused the rioters of being destructive. “Their goal is demolition,” he stated, and pledged to defeat the “radical left, the Marxists, the anarchists, the agitators, the looters.”
He also attacked the protesters for the destruction of statues saying that the country’s rich heritage belongs to citizens of all races and that the patriots who built the country were heroes, not villains.
Ahead of the president’s speech, Black Lives Matter protesters had gathered outside the White House.
A massive fireworks display was later held in Washington DC, watched by spectators who gathered on the National Mall.
