Authorities in Greece have banned swimming, fishing and water sports as the country toughens up its already severe restrictions of movement to combat the spread of coronavirus.
According to public broadcaster ERT, the Ministry of Shipping and Islands Policy has sent a circular to all port authorities throughout the country informing them about the ban on these activities.
The new regulation confirms that swimming and water sports will not be regarded as physical exercise — which is allowed under the existing rules.
According to the circular, the activities which are now banned include:

  • swimming
  • fishing from land and underwater fishing (speargun)
  • water-sports (canoeing, kayaking, wind surfing, kite surfing, paddleboarding, sailing)

Authorities are particularly anxious to restrict movement and keep social distancing to a maximum as warm weather and the upcoming Easter holiday may tempt many Greeks to storm the beaches.
