A beautiful story of true love, respect, inclusiveness and kindness has been taking place in a classroom in the Primary School of Embrosnero, in Chania, on the Greek island of Crete.
The classmates of Evangelia, a young girl who is partially hearing-impaired, are learning Greek sign language to better communicate with her throughout the day so that she doesn’t feel isolated, while the class continues to communicate and learn verbally as well.
Evangelia’s class has two teachers, one who teaches verbally and another who interprets everything into Greek sign language for Evangelia.
At the same time, all of the students in the class are simultaneously learning how to communicate in sign language, so that everyone in the class can interact with each other when needed.
Despina Iosifidou, one of the two teachers, explained to interviewers from the neakriti.gr website that all students receive a one-hour class of the Greek sign language every week. Perhaps more importantly, they are approaching the issue of hearing impairment holistically, learning about the everyday life of people with hearing problems.
Currently, most of the classrooms in Greece have special education teaching personnel who not only help educate special needs children but try to help them become integrated into their classes.
Students across Greece who need additional support in the classroom are thriving due to the efforts of these teachers, with impressively positive results already seen in terms of inclusiveness and performance.
