Internationally-Acclaimed Fashion Designer Sophia Kokosalaki Dies at 47

Sophia Kokosalaki, a London-based and internationally-acclaimed Greek fashion designer, died on Monday at the age of 47.
Media reports suggest that Kokosalaki had been fighting bravely for more than two months against cancer, eventually succumbing to the disease on Monday afternoon.
Born and raised in Athens, after her graduation from the University of Athens, Kokosalaki continued her studies in London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
After her graduation, she opened her own business in 1999, and since then, she had been widely known as a mover and shaker in the world of fashion, not only in the UK and Greece but globally as well.
Her most notable contribution to Greek fashion came when she was hired to design the costumes for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.
Taking her inspiration from ancient Greece’s modesty and sense of harmony, Kokosalaki dressed the more than six thousand people who performed in the Athens’ ceremonies in the summer of 2004.

Kokosalaki’s signature design element was classic Greek draping, combined with hand-crafted additions to her various outfits. However, her work was not restrained to this mode, including other, heavier fabrics, including leather and those with thicker textures.
Kokosalaki received a number of prizes throughout her successful career, including the ”Elle Designer” award, the ”Art Foundation Award for Fashion” in 2002 and the ”New Generation Designer” award in 2004.
Her name and work was also noted regularly in the Editorials sections of some of the world’s best fashion magazines, such as Vogue, W, and Harper’s Bazaar.
