Yorgaki, The Only Traditional Greek Coffee Shop in Paris

Yorgaki, (which means “The little George” in Greek) is the one and only traditional Greek coffee shop, or kafeneia, in all of Paris. And it is a place where Greek tradition meets the unique elegance of France.

Located in the ninth ”arrondissement” of Paris, as the French capital’s districts are called, the Yorgaki offers a unique Greek taste experience which will send you many decades back in time.

If you are on vacation and simply must have your daily dose of traditional Greek coffee, at the Yorgaki you will be able to see how it tastes when it’s made using the old method, called ”hovoli.”

Hovoli is a unique type of brewing apparatus which uses hot sand and ashes to slowly ”bake” coffee. This is exactly how Greeks, Turks and other people in the past would always brew their coffee.

This technique allows the coffee to boil slowly, leisurely and elegantly, allowing it to keep its rich aromas and the foam on the top, which forms naturally as it brews.

Apart from its superlative Greek coffee, the Yorgaki kafeneia offers a large variety of Greek delicacies as well, among which is the famous (and controversial for many) dish of watermelon topped with feta cheese and olive oil.

While some find this combination weird, it remains among Greece’s most popular summer desserts, and the Yorgaki kafeneia offers Parisians (and homesick Greeks) the chance to see for yourself how it tastes.
