Infamous "Syntagma Archer" Escapes Greek Prison

A man who became infamous in 2011 for using a bow and arrow against police forces during a protest in Athens’ Syntagma Square, escaped the agricultural prison of Tyrintha in the Peloponnese on Friday.
Giannis Michalidis was given a 13-year sentence in 2015 for his armed attack on members of the police force’s Immediate Response Unit in Pefki, in northern Athens.
Police alleged Michalidis is also a member of the urban guerrilla group called “Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire.”
He was detained during a protest rally in Syntagma in February of 2011 after he attempted to shoot at police with a modern, powerful bow-and-arrow. Ever since that incident, he has been known as the “Syntagma Archer.”
