Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan celebrated the 556th anniversary of the fall of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) to Ottoman Turk forces on May 29, 1453.
In a tweet posted on Wednesday, Erdogan lavished praised on Sultan Mehmed II, whose army breached the walls of the once-unimpregnable Christian city, which was the capital of the Greek-speaking Byzantine Empire for more than a millennium.

The Turkish leader stated that the conquest of Constantinople changed the course of world history.
“May Sultan Mehmed II of the Ottomans and his army rest in peace,” Erdogan tweeted.

Turkey’s presidential communications director also publicly commemorated the fateful anniversary.
“We shout out! We say persistently to those who cannot stand Istanbul to become an Islamic city, to those who set an eye on these sacred lands, to those colonized minds which say ‘the persecution began in 1453’ that may the 566th anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul be blessed,” Fahrettin Altun wrote on Twitter.
