Lefkada's Agios Nikolaos: The Dream Islet Reminiscent of the Caribbean

Agios Nikolaos is a tiny, sandy island rising out of the Ionian sea, situated next to the island of Lefkada.
Its beauty amazes anyone who is lucky enough to visit it, with its turquoise waters and its long sandy beach which extends seemingly forever, gradually falling away into the sea.
This place, which reminds visitors more of a south Asian or Caribbean paradise rather than a Mediterranean islet, was the place that Eva Sikelianos, the wife of Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos, loved most in the entire world.

The famous Greek lyric poet and playwright, together with his wife, spent many years of their lives there, prompting the locals to call the islet ”Sikelianos’ Isle.”
Eva even tried to buy their beloved island from the Greek state, but she never managed to achieve her goal.

The islet is a sandbank which has only a couple feet of elevation and several trees and shrubs. It is so tiny that there is only one building on it, the Chapel of Saint Nicholas, which is a small traditional Greek Orthodox church dedicated to the patron saint of sailors.
