Microsoft Borrows Appeal of Santorini to Name New Project

Microsoft has apparently honored the idyllic Greek island by naming its lightweight operation system, which is currently under development, “Santorini.”

According to industry insiders, the new operation system is also referred to as “Windows Lite,” and is meant to compete with Chrome.

According to a report from Zac Bowden of Windows Central, the Microsoft project has a new codename, and it’s now internally called Santorini.

There was also a Microsoft Garage project called “Project Santorini,” which reportedly was “a unique photo experience emphasizing the power of nostalgia.”

According to Bowden, Santorini is a type of “Windows Core” operation system which will come in a variety of forms. For example, the “Surface Hub 2X,” which industry insiders got to play with at the recent “Ignite” conference, was another form of the system.

The Ignite Conference is an annual event for technology professionals, sponsored by Microsoft.

Bowden says that another form of the system will be the next HoloLens, which will be unveiled at the “Mobile World Congress” on Sunday.
