Greek Teachers Protest Against Proposed Legislation in Athens

Thousands of public school teachers joined a rally in central Athens on Thursday protesting the Education Ministry’s proposed law on a new hiring system for teachers.
The proposed legislation is scheduled to be put to a vote on Thursday in Parliament. The  protestors demand the withdrawal of the legislation, which they believe would be unfair to teachers who have years of experience.
The teachers’ union, DOE, is also demanding the creation of additional permanent positions.
The civil servants’ umbrella union, ADEDY, and the Greek Federation of Secondary Education State School Teachers, OLME, are holding a rally in solidarity with the Greek teachers’ union in front of the Greek parliament building today.
ADEDY and DOE declared a 24-hour strike on all day Thursday.
