A moderate earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale jolted the Ionian island of Lefkada on Saturday morning, in an area that has seen a spike in seismic activity over recent days.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) has put its strength at 4.5 on the Richter Scale.
The Athens-based Geodynamic Institute said that the tremor occurred at 10:05 a.m. and its epicenter was 2 kilometers northwest of Lefkada.
On the same day, a slightly bigger quake that hit 4.6 on the Richter Scale occurred 75 kilometers south of the island of Zakynthos before 10:00 a.m. local time.
The area has seen a spike in seismic activity over recent days, following a 6.4-magnitude quake off Zakynthos on Oct. 26.

The latest data shows that the earthquake that shook a week ago has actually caused the island’s town to shift laterally by five centimeters, not three as first reported, the head of the National Observatory of Athens Geodynamic Institute, Prof. Akis Tselentis, posted on Facebook on Friday.
He also noted that the pattern of post-quake activity around the island was unfolding normally at this time “and is expected to continue with a gradually falling frequency – but not intensity – in the occurrence of aftershocks.”
While this meant that the number of aftershocks each day will be fewer, some of them could continue to be strong, he explained.
120 uninhabitable homes
Meanwhile, crews of engineers continue inspections of earthquake-stricken building on the island.
Out of 250 buildings inspected by Saturday, 120 have been classified as uninhabitable.
