Mariupol, or Marioupolis as it is known in Greek, is an important city of nearly 500,000 people in south eastern Ukraine, situated on the north coast of the Sea of Azov at the mouth of the Kalmius river, in the Pryazovia region.
On the day that marks the 240th anniversary of the city’s establishment, more than 5,000 people attended the inauguration of the first Greek square in the city.
Boubouras Foundation‘s endowment of more than €500,000 ($575,000) allowed the local authorities to build this 9,500-square-meters towns quare equipped with 25 benches, 21 lampposts and 330 meters of bicycle path.
George Poukamisas, Greece’s Ambassador to Ukraine congratulated Pantelis Boubouras for his donation and his constant efforts to contribute to Mariupol’s society while the city’s Mayor awarded the foundation’s president with the medal of honor.
Mariupol has a thriving Greek community which, despite the difficulties of the last year’s war, tries to offer as much as it can to the local community of a city that has a long history of Greek presence and influence, as it was established by Greeks in the 18th century.
