Greek Beach on Skiathos in Danger of Losing its Unique Pebbles

Lalaria Beach on Skiathos island, famous for its big, white pebbles, is at risk of losing its unique character as visitors insist on taking away the stones as souvenirs.
Local authorities, seeing that tourists are pocketing the famous round pebbles at alarming rates, have posted signs across Lalaria Beach telling visitors: “Take pictures, not pebbles. Save Lalaria Beach”.
Thodoris Tzoumas of the “Skiathos” Culture Association told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency: “The rounded white pebbles we call ‘lalaria’ (from the ancient word las which means stone) are created only in the specific area, which is accessible only by sea.
“In recent years, we have undertaken, in cooperation with the Skiathos Port Authority, an awareness campaign for the protection of the beach.”
The signs have been put on the popular beach and the passenger boat that transports visitors there. Fines of €400 to €1,000 will be imposed on those who insist on taking the stones.
