Former Greek Minister Jailed for Corruption to be Freed Amid Ill Health

Akis Tsochatzopoulos, the disgraced former minister who was sentenced to 19 years in prison for taking kickbacks, is to be released on health grounds.
The former politician, who served as a minister in several Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) cabinets between 1981 and 2004, is currently in Korydallos prison hospital being treated for heart disease.
He was arrested in April 2012 on charges of money laundering.
In October 2013, he was found guilty and the following day he was sentenced to the maximum penalty of 19 years’ incarceration.
Tsochatzopoulos was a founding member of the PASOK party. He was elected as a member of the Greek parliament for the first time in 1981 and remained there until 2007.
Last November, a Greek court ordered the confiscation of all properties and bank accounts of the former minister.
