Palestinians Killed in US Embassy Protest on Israeli Border

Palestinian protest in Gaza along border with Israel

An unconfirmed number of Palestinians have been killed along Gaza’s border with Israel in Monday protests linked to the opening of the U.S.’ new embassy building in Jerusalem.

Reports from the region say thousands of Palestinians have massed at the border fence with Israel, burning tires to build a smokescreen. Israel military sources say the protesters attacked the fence at several spots.

Palestinian health officials have said at least seven people were killed and claim around 500 more were injured in Israeli fire. There was also some violence in the West Bank.

However, other news outlets are reporting the Palestinian death toll to be over a dozen.

Palestinians are angry at the decision earlier this year by President Donald Trump to relocate the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which Israel claims as its capital.

Much of the international community regard East Jerusalem as being under Israeli occupation. Most foreign embassies in Israel are located in Tel Aviv.

Tensions in the ancient city itself have also been running high. At the start of May, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III, told the U.K.’s Guardian newspaper that there had been repeated attacks by radical Jewish settlers on Christian churches, clergy and worshippers.
