Greek Woman Charged for Killing her Newborn

Athens police arrested a 22-year-old woman for letting her newborn baby die in the light shaft of her apartment building is likely to be charged with infanticide.
The woman, who is a student, told police that she gave birth to the infant in her bathtub in the Nea Smyrni apartment on Friday and cut the umbilical cord with a pair of scissors.
Then she disposed the placenta in the trash, wrapped the newborn in a blanket and threw it in the light shaft of the building.
The dead infant was discovered on Saturday. The woman was arrested on Tuesday and on Wednesday she was hospitalized for suffering a shock.
The 22-year-old is a college student in Kalamata and she moved to Athens after her pregnancy to live with her mother.
