Athens was honored on World Book Day on Monday taking over as World Book Capital for 2018 with a celebratory event hosted at the Acropolis Museum.
The Greek capital as of yesterday, April 23, will be the World Book Capital for an entire year. During the year, more than 250 book-related events will take place across the city, including seminars, workshops, competitions and various activities for adults and kids.
Athens takes over from the city of Conakry in Guinea and will pass the torch to the city of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates on the same date next year. World Book Day was established by UNESCO in 1995.
President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos addressed the event saying, “Athens’ journey starts. I would like to assure UNESCO that the choice of Athens was right, not only because of its history, but also thanks to its prospects.”
The Greek president praised Athens as a destination of culture and Athenians as “passionate people” who can share their love for knowledge which helps communication between cultures.
“In Athens today and across the world we celebrate books. We celebrate writing, reading, publishing and sharing books. All these activities enhance human beings,” Ian Denison, Unesco Publishing and Branding Chief, announced at the inaugurating event.
