Greece's High Court Upholds E-Cigarette Ban in Public Places

E-cigarettes fall under the same restrictions as tobacco smoking in Greece

Electronic cigarettes fall under the same restrictions as cigarette smoking, Greece’s  Council of State plenary has ruled, including a ban on their use in public spaces, transportation and in advertisements.
Laws on conventional smoking also affect e-cigarettes, Greece’s highest administrative court said in decision 704/2018, rejecting a petition by the Association of Greek e-cigarette Businesses to cancel the law in force since early 2017 that restricts its use.
The court added that the association, which claimed it was financially harmed, may file a lawsuit for compensation by Greek courts for damages resulting from the application of the law.
Smokers, or “vapers,” of electronic cigarettes feel that the existing law groups them with traditional smokers and denies them the opportunity to use an alternative to tobacco smoke.
Over the past years there has been contradicting reports and studies of the safety and long-term health consequences of electronic cigarettes.
