Athens taxi drivers walked off the job on Tuesday in protest at what they call unfair competition from the Uber ride-hailing service.
Cab drivers gathered outside their SATA union headquarters in downtown Athens in protest over the “illegal and arbitrary invasion of Uber.”
The protest will last until 5:00 p.m. local time.
SATA also expressed dismay at delays in passing a Transport Ministry bill to reorganize their sector.
The new bill that would impose restrictions on taxi services was drafted last September but has not yet been approved by the Greek parliament.
It would require all companies offering taxi services to have a state license and to do business only with licensed taxis.
This would effectively bar companies like Uber, which work with nonprofessional drivers using private vehicles.
