Greeks are at the lowest levels in the EU in regards to gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and purchasing power standard (PPS), according to Eurostat.
The 2016 figures from the European statistical authority also show that Epirus and Thrace are among the poorest regions in Europe, with only particular regions of Bulgaria, Romania and France being poorer.
At the same time, Greece as a whole only reaches 68 percent of the European average GDP per capita.
Eurostat figures show that the highest GDP and the highest purchasing power standard are in western London with 611 percent over the EU average, followed by Luxembourg totaling 257 percent of the EU PPS average, southern and eastern Ireland at 217 percent and Brussels and Hamburg tying at 200 percent.
In Greece, Athenians have the largest purchasing power standard while at the same time they are at 92 percent of average EU GDP.
On the opposite end of the scale are the regions of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace with 46 percent of GDP average and Epirus with 48 percent of GDP average.
The poorest region of the EU is Bulgaria’s Severozapaden, where residents have only 29 percent of the average European GDP per capita.
It is followed by Mayotte in France with 33 percent of GDP, Severen Tsentralen and Yuzhen Tsentralen in Bulgaria with 34 percent and Nord-Est in Romania with 36 percent of the EU average.
