Ammunition Seized from Tanzania-Flagged Ship to Be Transferred to Army Warehouse

The 410 tons of explosives impounded by Greek authorities from the Tanzania-flagged freighter “Andromeda” on January 8 while the ship was sailing off Crete, will be transferred from the port of Heraklion to an army warehouse, the shipping ministry said on Monday.
According to information, Port Authorities are in contact with the Army to organize the transport of the ammunition, possibly to northern Greece. The operation could start on Tuesday.
On Monday, the freighter’s eight-person crew, comprised of two Ukrainians, five Indians and one Albanian, continued to present their pleas before the prosecutor.
They are charged with violating laws on supplying groups with weapons and explosives and disruption of ship safety.
The freighter, which was sailing from Turkey and was reportedly bound for Libya, was loaded with 29 crates of explosives and other materials that could be used to construct bombs used in terrorist attacks, such as detonators, ammonium nitrate and a special gel.
The European Union has issued a directive that bans the sale of transportation of weapons and explosives to Libya. Authorities also identified 102 safety concerns relating to the ship’s seaworthiness.
