Alexandre Desplat: The Most Nominated Greek in Hollywood Wins Another Golden Globe

Alexandre Desplat won the Oscar for best original scoreFilm composer Alexandre Desplat is no newcomer when it comes to red carpets. He is officially the most nominated artist of Greek descent at any awards show, and on Sunday at the 2018 Golden Globes, he beat out composer heavyweights like Hans Zimmer and John Williams to win another golden statue.

Desplat won the Best Score award for his work on Guillermo del Toro’s “Shape of Water”, a movie which also won the Best Director award.

Watch his backstage speech on his Greek heritage:

This was the ninth time that Desplat had been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Score since 2004, when he garnered his first nomination for his work on “Girl With a Pearl Earring”. He has won a statue once before for the soundtrack of “The Painted Veil”.

However, the Golden Globes is not the only show which counts Desplat is a frequent visitor. The composer has been nominated seven times over six years at the prestigious Academy Awards, winning an Oscar statue in 2015 for “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, on the year in which he nominated twice, as the committee also recognized his work on “The Imitation Game”.

The composer has been working in the industry since 1986, when he created the soundtrack for a small French film called “Le souffleur”. Since then, he has worked on everything from independent prestigious productions to blockbusters, including “The Queen”, “Godzilla”, “Moonrise Kingdom”, “Argo”, and “Zero Dark Thirty”.

Desplat maintains a lot of pride in his Greek identity, which he emphasized in his red carpet interview this year. “Everything that brings Greece to the front, I am proud of. Everything that makes my Greek mother happy, I am proud”, he stated.

Whether it’s the Grammys, the Golden Globes, or the Satellite Awards, you can probably expect to see much more of Alexandre Desplat in the years to come. We hope to see him back on the red carpet this year at the 2018 Academy Awards.
