Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras spoke on Friday with the mother of an 11-year-old Afghan boy whose house was pelted with stones by unknown assailants early this morning.
The boy had been chosen by lot to be his school’s flag-bearer in the October 28 national holiday parade in Dafni, a southern suburb of Athens, but wasn’t allowed to, and was instead given the school sign.
“I spoke earlier with Amir and his mother and I expressed by support for what they went through,” he said on his Twitter account, adding that he asked the ministries of education and migration policy to address the issue with due care.
“Amir, and every child in our country, deserves the right to security and Greek education, without discriminations,” he added.
Mouzalas visits family
Migration Policy Minister Yiannis Mouzalas paid a visit late on Friday to the family of 11-year-old Afghan student Amir.
Mouzalas told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) that “I went to show that the state wants to protect these people, and that despite such moments, Greek people remain supportive of refugees.”
The minister told ANA that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had spoken by phone with Amir and his mother and expressed his support.
Amir’s family has been transferred to another apartment.
