The economic crisis has led many Greeks to go to the supermarket with a shopping list, and hunt on the internet for special offers, new research shows.
Known as spendthrift people, Greeks rarely went to the supermarket carrying a list with the items they need. Now, as an IRI market research company consumer survey shows, many Greeks go to the super market having done their research on the internet first, in order to find the things they need at the lowest price.
The survey was conducted in seven European countries, and shows that in Greece, shopping habits have changed after the economic crisis hit.
Specifically, 93% of respondents in Greece list the items they need to buy from the supermarket before they go. This is the largest percentage among the countries surveyed (Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, United Kingdom and the Netherlands). The corresponding rate in all countries surveyed is 84%, while only 11% do not prepare and go on with spontaneous purchases.
In addition to this, 45% of the respondents in Greece use the internet to find information about the products they want to buy from the supermarket, and they especially look at the prices.
High rates were generally observed in the southern European countries, who participated in the research, which is no surprise as these are the countries that suffered the most from the economic crisis.
In particular, 39% of Spaniards and 33% of Italians are looking for information on the web, while in the Netherlands and France the percentages are 26 and 31 respectively. In Germany, the rate is also high, 37%, apparently due to increased consumer consciousness, as opposed to crisis.
