Germany is to send 30 policemen to guard Greece’s northern border in fear that the country would be flooded by migrants who will try to cross to northern Europe, a Spiegel report says.
The report which is posted in the web edition of the German magazine says that Berlin is worried that a new influx of migrants might appear coming from the Turkish shores. The migrants would be likely to gather again at Greece’s border with Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and try to cross further north to Europe.
The German police will aid Greek border guards to patrol the northern border. According to Spiegel, the decision was taken by Frontex, the European Union border police, in late 2016.
The first foreign border guards are starting their duty on Thursday service. Among them are the first two Germans with a dog. Ten more German policemen are expected to arrive in the coming days.
The German press reported, the concern of the German government is that the European Union-Turkey agreement for curbing the migrant flow might crumble. Currently, there are about three million refugees and migrants in Turkey, with Ankara implying that the deal might break and Greece would be flooded by migrants again, with the vast majority of them likely to try to move on to Europe.
