The law on the operation of drones in Greece was published in the Government Gazzette on Friday, applying to the use of drones when they fly more than 50 meters away from the controller.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority (YPA), several regulations for the operation of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) apply for training centers and pilot licensing for drones.
The new regulations are implemented in order to ensure a high level of safety, taking into account the rapidly increasing use of drones for business purposes, YPA says. They apply to the use of drones that operate more than 50 meters away from the controller.
Operators who make professional use of drones should be UAS pilot license holders. There are five categories of licenses for drones depending on the maximum take-off mass and they are issued by YPA.
To be licensed, a candidate for pilot of commercial use UAS must complete a theoretical and practical training program from a licensed UAS Educational Center and pass an examination before a certified examiner. Similar procedures apply for licensed instructors and examiners.
The Educational Centers for drones should be authorized by the Civil Aviation Authority, following the standards of European and international organizations. They must have modern facilities, audiovisual equipment and certified drones.
