According to Reuters, on Thursday members of the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of an immediate temporary halt to EU-membership talks with Turkey, urging the European Commission and national governments to freeze the ongoing negotiations until further notice.
The EU lawmakers cited Turkey’s recent “disproportionate” reaction to the failed military coup that took place in the country on July 15, resulting in the mass arrests of citizens, military personnel and professionals.
At this time there is no word on the reaction of Turkey to this move by the European Parliament.
