Chris Tsantalis and Greek Metal Band INK

If you haven’t yet heard of the band INK from Alexandroupolis, Greece, you will almost certainly be hearing about them soon.

INK’s unique style of alternative metal music is evident in songs like “Persephone” from their most recent album, “Loom”, released in January 2016. Represented by record label D.I.Y., the band consists of Chris Tsantalis on vocals, Kostas Apostolopoulos on guitar, Stavros Tsantalis on drums, and Dra on bass – you can check out one of their older popular songs, “Ophelia”, below.

Anyone following the Greek music scene knows that underground music, especially alternative rock and metal, are alive and well in Athens, Thessaloniki, and all throughout Greece. So we spoke to vocalist Chris Tsantalis to get a better insight into this alternative metal band’s journey, music and aspirations.

Here is what he had to say:

How did you come together to start the band?

It goes back to 1999, when we were students sharing our vacations. One day, two of the best musicians of our hometown of Alexandroupolis, Savvas Karabalasi and Kostas Apostolopoulos, offered me a gig for a forthcoming demo they were recording. I accepted and that was the first time I professionally sang.

We got some good reviews from Greek magazines and decided to continue with INK by writing some new songs whenever we were together in Alexandroupolis. In 2003, I was studying in Thessaloniki where our guitar player Kostas Apostolopoulos was living as well, so we started rehearsing and promoting the songs we had written in the past years.

In my mind, we have existed as a live act since 2004, when the band became a basic and beautiful ingredient of our lives.

What are your biggest inspirations in your music?

Life in general. Humanity, emotions, the great big sky, the night, poetry, literature, experiences. Artists like Alice in Chains, Faith No More, The Cult, The Doors, Tea Party, Soundgarden, Monster Magnet.

How would you describe your music?

Alternative metal, with big psychedelic doses.

What are your plans for the future and where would you love to see the band go?

Well, I’d love to evolve as a musician and as a human being. This includes the evolution of the band, our music, better sound, bigger stages and concerts.

Any upcoming concerts or songs?

We are doing a cover for a compilation of the Greek Metal Hammer, as a tribute to the legendary band Nightstalker. We also recorded a cover for the Kyuss song Gardenia.

As of now, we have plans to collaborate again with our producer Johnny Bacolas from Seattle who has worked with Alice in Chains and Second Coming. Concerts are being scheduled, and we may be filming a new video this winter with a famous Greek actress, though I can’t say anything specific about that yet!
