Chinese Artists' Concert in Athens Unites Expats and Greeks

athens concert hallOn Wednesday the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater Symphony Orchestra performed to raving reviews at the Athens Concert Hall.
The concert was conducted by Zhang Zheng and was a treat to expats and Greeks alike who came together to celebrate the 67th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China as well as the 10th year marking a comprehensive partnership between China and Greece.
The concert featured many classic and well-known compositions from China and also used traditional Chinese instruments such as the lin gan, duo huifang, yu xiaoqing in addition to the erhu, pipa and Chinese bamboo flute.
The concert ended with the popular Greek song that won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1960 called “Children of Piraeus” by the late Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis, as the audience rose to their feet giving the Chinese musicians a standing ovation.
Greece’s Culture Minister Aristeidis Baltas said “Today’s event links two music traditions on the level of music instruments and conditions for this dialogue. It was tremendously interesting how traditional Chinese music instruments were connected to Western music instruments. I think that this kind of exchange in the music field promises very interesting compositions in the future.”
