The Greek team at theĀ 15th Paralympics in Rio got off to a great start on the first day on Thursday. Thanasis Konstantinidis broke three world records to win the gold medal in the F32 shot put final whereas his teammate, Dimitris Zisidis, won a bronze medal in the same event.
The great start boosted morale for the Greek team that hopes to rank highly at the games. At the moment, Greece ranks thirds in the medal rankings behind China and Brazil.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras congratulated Konstantinidis on breaking the world record at 10 meters and 39 cm and Zisidis for winning bronze with 9 meters and 24 cm. The prime minister tweeted: “The successes of Greek athletes at #Rio2016 continue to make us proud.”
