Spike in Migrants Attempting to Cross Greece-FYROM Border

idomeni border FYROMSince FYROM closed their borders to migrants this past springĀ and bottlenecked tens of thousands of people in Greece the Greece-FYROM border has seen a decline in the amount of migrants trying to enter FYROM from Greece. Also the dismantling of the Idomeni refugee camp along the Greece-FYROM border helped curb attempts by migrants to illegally cross the border.
However, according to authorities those numbers are once again rising as there has been an increase in migrants trying to illegally cross the border into FYROM as many migrants have grown tired of waiting for the asylum process to play out while they are forced to live in over-crowded reception centers.
A police officer recently told the Greek newspaper, Kathimerini that the migrants “come by train to the village of Mouries and try to cross over, through woods and along the shores of Doirani Lake…Others try to (cross the border) outside the village of HamiloĀ near Idomeni.ā€
Some migrants have been reported to cross successfully and authorities worry that these accounts of successful attempts will begin to encourage even more migrants to try their luck at the Greece-FYROM border.
On Thursday migrants clashed with Greek police in protests which occurred in various cities around the country. Hundreds of migrants from Syria and Iraq from the Hersos campĀ protested inĀ KilkisĀ and flooded the highway leading to the border in an attempt to block traffic, while in Thessaloniki protesters chanted demanding the border be opened.
As of the present time, government reports say that there are some 58,000 migrants trapped in Greece since FYROM closed its border to migrants this past spring.
