Seven Turkish Nationals Seeking Asylum in Rhodes and Alexandroupoli

TURKS11
Seven Turkish citizens are reportedly seeking asylum in Greece, reports Greece’s daily newspaper Kathimerini. The newspaper reports that the Turkish citizens approached Greek authorities in Alexandroupoli, northern Greece, and also on the island of Rhodes, in the southeastern Aegean.
The newspaper reports that the couple seeking asylum in Alexandroupoli are university professors, parents of two children, who are seeking protection from prosecution in Turkey. Though all four have Turkish passports, only the man has documentation that has not expired. They are said to have entered Greece through the northeastern border with Turkey and it is possible that they crossed the Evros River by boat.
On Rhodes, three businessmen are said to be seeking asylum, however, only one has a valid passport.
All seven Turkish nationals will appear before a Greek prosecutor and will be charged with illegal entry to Greece before their asylum cases are examined. Their case comes following the group of eight military officials who are also seeking political asylum after entering Greece in the wake of the failed coup attempt in Turkey.
