Greek Composer Yanni to Perform at Jordan Festival

yanni-concertThe famous Greek composer and pianist, Yanni will be closing the Jordan Festival 2016 in September at the Amman Citadel. Numerous concerts and events have been planned to take place at the Citadel as part of the festival, featuring well-known artists such as Marcel Khalife and Turkish dance troupe Fire of Anatolia, noted a Somika Basu spokesperson of the Friends of Jordan Festivals.

“We feel we have designed the festival so that there is something for everybody of all ages and all interests,” Basu told The Jordan Times. “All this is going to happen at Amman Citadel, so the view is going to be lovely and we hope it will draw awareness to the heritage of Amman.”

“We want to promote different kinds of art forms,” she noted, adding that it was not easy to sign Yanni as the festival’s closing act. “It was so difficult to bring Yanni to Jordan. He is currently on a world tour and we have been in talks with his managers for almost one year negotiating on dates and times,” she explained.

“He could have performed in Jerash or Petra, but it is also our job to protect the heritage site,” she noted, explaining that the high bass levels and loud volume of Yanni’s performances could damage the ancient sites.

Yiannis Chryssomallis, more commonly referred to as Yanni, is a Greek composer, pianist and music producer who is currently living and working in the United States. He was born November 14, 1954 in Kalamata, Greece and displayed his musical talent at a young age, learning to play piano at the age of 6.

In 1977 Yanni joined the rock group Chameleon, performing with its founder, drummer Charlie Adams. He also worked with choreographer Loyce Houlton to provide music for dance works produced by the Minnesota Dance Theatre. After touring with Chameleon from 1980 to 1984, Yanni moved to Los Angeles to focus on his career.
