My Sweet Home, Chicago: Exhibit Tells History of Greek Immigrants and America’s Candy Capital

sweet home chicagoThe National Hellenic Museum will host the exhibit Sweet Home Chicagotracing Chicago’s candy-making history back to the 19th century and the connection to the Greek immigrant community.

Created by the Elmhurst Historical Museum with items added to the exhibit from the National Hellenic Museum, the event opens in June and will highlight some of the famous candy products to come out of Chicago such as Milk Duds, Tootsie Roll, the Dove Bar, Cracker Jack, Cupid Candies and Frango Mints.

Other highlights will detail Chicago’s most famous Greek-owned ice cream and candy shop and will also showcase the entrepreneurial genius of early Greek immigrants dating back as far as 1906 when The Greek Star, one of the oldest Greek language newspapers, reported that there were 925 Greek-owned candy stores and ice-cream shops in Chicago at that time.

At the exhibit there will be a short documentary narrated by the former CBS anchor, Bill Kurtis as well as nostalgic photos and artifacts, promising to take visitors down memory lane to their childhoods.
